STILLNESS IS DIVINE: A Beginners Meditation Guide

Stillness is where all Creation begins; A still mind is a divine mind.
In order to create that which is truly of God, our minds need to learn to be still.  It's the divinity within us that allows us to create.

In the book of Psalms, in the Old Testament, there are 8 scriptures that talk about meditation. My favorite one, Psalms 46:10 says, "Be still and know that I am God..."  In 1st Timothy 4:15, in the New Testament, Paul is talking about many deep subjects and says, "Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all."  In D&C 76:19, it tells us wonderful blessings or gifts that can be received from meditation; "and while we meditated upon these things, the Lord touched the eyes of our understandings and they were opened, and the glory of the Lord shone round about."

The ultimate goal of meditation is to obtain stillness. Being still is the only way we can connect to God and come to know Him; and that is the only way we can truly come to know ourselves.

Blase' Pascal said "All man's miseries derive from not being able to sit quietly in a room alone."
How is your mind? Are you able to sit in stillness, or do you tend to continually bounce from one thought to another?

Meditation can be a very simple practice to begin. You can start by deep breathing. Use your intention to focus on breathing in the energies of calm and relaxation, and then exhaling the energies of stress or tension. Do this over and over again until your mind no longer wanders. If it does, don't worry. Simply bring it back and focus of your breath. Sometimes it may take many tries until you're able to train your mind to become still.

If you feel uncomfortable meditating on your own and need help getting started, there are many books available that can guide you through a meditation process. Or you can simply download an online meditation program. Depok Chopra has a great website with meditation programs for sale and also to try at no cost.

Apart from the spiritual benefits of meditation, the health benefits alone are worth starting a daily program. Research from the University of Wisconsin-Madison have shown meditation to have beneficial and lasting changes in the immune-system as well as electrical brain activity.

Start your practice today and experience the peace, tranquility, and increased health that comes from this simple, yet amazing practice.
